Vestal Superintendent reacts to budget approval

VESTAL -- It's been a stressful time for area school boards, but with this year's budget season now behind us, the districts are already planning for the next school year.
Tuesday night at a Vestal School Board meeting, Superintendent Mark LaRoach talked with Fox 40 about the recent approval by district voters of this year's budget.

LaRoach said that the conservative approach taken by Vestal and all of the area school districts to stay under the maximum tax levy allowed all of the area's budgets to get approved.

"In the Southern Tier, citizens continue to be very supportive of education," LaRoach said.  "But it's also an indication that a conservative approach to setting that levy does pay off and in this region, all budgets in this BOCES region did pass and none were above the maximum allowable levy."

LaRoach notes that 95% of the budgets across the state passed, but only 25% of those over the maximum tax levy were approved.
