Guns for Groceries

It was guns for groceries today in Johnson City.

At St. James Church Saturday morning, there was a line of people getting ready to turn in their firearms. Sheriffs say they collected approximately 50 firearms from local residents.

This is the fourth annual event and officials say it is designed to protect the children above all else.

"We have long-guns, rifles, and shotguns. We collected handguns and for the first time we've had assault rifles as well. We received two assault rifles. So the people who handed in assault rifles go $100 worth of gift certificates," said Jack Gilroy, a Committee Member at St. James.

The Broome Sheriff's Deputy Weapons Expert will inspect each gun, and then they will be destroyed.
