Cell Phone Thefts On The Rise
5/10/2013 (Updated 9:53:06 PM)Smart phones, tablets, all pieces of technology that are supposed to make life more convenient. But do they also make you a target for thieves?
According to the Federal Communications Commission, 40 percent of thefts in major American cities now involve cell phones.
Washington D.C. reported 54 percent more cell phone robberies in 2011 than in 2007. The big problem, even locally? The drug trade, which creates a need for items that can be flipped for quick cash.
"We're seeing them turn up in different areas whether it's in drug raids, maybe they've traded it for drugs. We have found some in swap shops, where swap shops will take them. The nice thing with a swap shop in those cases we can hopefully track somebody down who brought it in," said Sgt. Jason Ellis of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.
Some have urged the industry to equip devices with the equivalent of a kill switch, making them useless in the case of theft.
