Verdict is in For Man Accused of Shooting Ithaca Police Officer

The man accused of shooting Ithaca police Officer Anthony Augustine  reportedly smiled when the jury's verdict was read to him.

That's because Jamel Booker was not convicted of the most serious charge against him attempted murder.

The jury was deadlocked on that charge. Booker was found guilty of lesser charges including Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer, First Degree Assault  and Criminal Possession and Use of a Firearm.

Prosecutors say Booker shot officer Augustine as Augustine was pursuing him after a car theft in October.

Although Booker admitted to the shooting, he said he did it out of fear of his life.

Sentencing is June 28th in Tompkins County Court.
