Arrested: Former Binghamton Parks and Recreation Director Accused of Stealing from City
4/11/2013 (Updated 6:12:59 PM)Former Director of Parks & Recreation John "Mokey" Whalen was arraigned for Grand Larceny in the Second Degree.
"If you steal from the City, we will catch you," said Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan. "We've proven this, and we won't tire in this effort."
Ryan and Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski told members of the media that they noticed "irregularities" in October and began an investigation in November.
Whalen worked for the city for 39 years and was known for having survived several mayoral administrations. Ryan said Whalen was planning on retiring in March but retired in November as a result of the investigation.
A spokesperson for the New York State Comptroller's Office confirmed on Friday the office was auditing the city of Binghamton and was collecting records from the Parks and Recreation Department.
FOX 40 obtained a letter sent to captains of adult softball teams who participated in BInghamton's recreational leagues. The letter from the office of New York State Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli sought records of payment in city recreation programs over the past five years.
