Funeral for Binghamton Fire Fighter John Janos
4/10/2013 (Updated 6:45:38 PM)BINGHAMTON -- Binghamton firefighter John Janos was laid to rest today at St Aquinas Church in Binghamton. The 57-year-old passed away from cardiac issues early Saturday while on duty.
Despite the rain this morning, hundreds of firefighters from all across the state lined up to say goodbye to one of their own: Janos, who has served the city for nearly 25 years.
"He was dedicated to others. He put himself always last," said Chris Mallery, PR Director of the Binghamton Fire Department.
Fire fighters said Janos, president of Binghamton Firefighter's Union, Local 729, was the cornerstone of the department.
"Make us a better department, better firefighters, teach everybody what he knew, and did anything for anybody he could help," said Mallery.
In addition to a firefighter, Janos was a paramedic, a friend, and to many: family.
"He was always there for us. Like a father, always looking out for us," said neighbor Melinda Jahn.
Neighbors described him as the security of the neighborhood, someone who was always available to the community.
"[My son Nehemiah and Janos] would talk for hours, and Mr. John would listen, listen, listen," said Jahn.
Donations in Janos' honor will be accepted at the Professional Firefighters Cancer Research Fund. You can learn more about it at iaff729.org.
