Blaze Causes Major Damage to Murray Street Home
4/6/2013 (Updated 10:50:31 PM)A blaze has caused serious damage to a home on Murray Street in Binghamton.
About 30 firefighters from the Johnson City and Binghamton department's responded to the call around 1:15 Saturday afternoon.
Upon arrival, the Binghamton Fire Chief says they were told a woman might still be inside on the third floor. Crews battled through the thick smoke looking for the woman who was later found safe outside of the building.
The Chief says there was heavy fire in the back of the building but says they had the fire under control in about 30 minutes.
"If you can see the size of the building, again, talking about five apartments, three stories, all with apartments . There was heavy fire up in the walls, in the dormers. They were able to knock the heaviest of it down relatively quickly, but then it's a lot going in with hand tools, very labor intensive," said Binghamton Fire Chief Daniel Thomas.
"I was amazed at how quickly it spread and then was a little concerned when I saw it kind of starting to spread toward our house, but it was amazing how fast it was," said Matthew Correa, neighbor.
Flames did spread to Correa's home, causing minor damage to his basement. Fire officials say the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured. The Red Cross is assisting the families.
