Family Welcomes Home Soldier
4/5/2013 (Updated 10:43:50 PM)Michelle Kane has been waiting a year to say these words.
"Welcome home Joe.."
M-E alum Joe Kane decided to enlist in the military two years ago. He is part of the 173rd Airborne Infantry Unit based in Italy.
"It's pretty much something that as an American citizen, I think is the right thing to do, especially at a young age to be able to serve your country," said Specialist Joseph Kane of the 173rd Airborne Infantry Unit. There is really nothing more you can do, nothing greater you can do for your country."
In July of 2012, he was deployed to Afghanistan. He returned to Italy this February.
"It's their job, so they knew they needed to go in to do their job and come home," said Michelle Kane, Joe's mother.
After many missed birthdays and holidays, the family is happy to see him home safe and sound.
"A lot of anxiety leading up to it, really excited to get home and this last flight I was just like every minute was just ticking by, waiting to get back home and be able to relax for a little while," said Joe.
Although he is their younger brother, their siblings say they look up to him.
"For his bravery and making the sacrifice, Being away from his friends and family--something I could never do," said his sister Sarah Kane.
"I'm very proud of him with all the service that he gave," said his brother Daniel Kane.
Joe will return to Italy in a month. His mother says he may re-enlist for a second tour.
