Unemployment Rate Down In Binghamton
4/3/2013 (Updated 11:02:40 PM)While consumer confidence might have slipped in New York State as a whole ----could a small dip in the unemployment rate and slight uptick in private-sector job growth mean a turnaround in the local economy?
The jobless rate in Binghamton dropped from 10.2 percent in January to 9.6 percent in February. However, the February numbers were the same as last year--in other words, no improvement.
But, the area did see a net gain of 200 private-sector jobs over the past year, a reversal of recent negative year-to-year private job growth.
"We're hopeful that this is a true bottom and that we can start recovering those jobs we've lost but we've got a lot of ground to cover," said analyst Christian Harris of the New York State Department of Labor.
The biggest local job gains in the past year was among private service providers - a sector that added 1,300 jobs.
