Broome County Child Fatality Review Report
4/3/2013 (Updated 11:00:31 PM)60 percent of all child deaths in Broome County involve infants according to the Broome County Health Department.
Officials there say proper sleep environments can help prevent these deaths. The County's review team says a parent should not let an infant sleep in their bed or on the couch. They say a baby can easily be suffocated by pillows and should not have them in their crib.
"What we would like to see is infants sleeping in an environment that look like this picture, here, where the child is in a crib by his or her self on their back with no toys, blankets, no pets, no other children, no other cushions or pillows or anything else in that crib," said Karol Kurst-Swanger, Coordinator of the Broome County Child Fatality Review Team.
The Broome County Child Fatality Review Team was founded in 2008. Its mission is to better understand the reasons behind child deaths and to develop ways to prevent such fatalities.
