John Schaffer on the Rail Trail
4/3/2013 (Updated 9:40:47 PM)The 2.1 mile Vestal Rail Trail draws thousands of people a year, and now it is about to get even bigger.
The Vestal Town Board has approved borrowing $225,000 in order to receive federal grant money for the expansion.
The $2.7 million dollar project would add 1.7 miles of trail between Main Street and Castle Gardens, and a bridge over Choconut Creek, but supervisor John Schaffer does have some objection.
"I'd rather use the money on infrastructure or some other repairs or hiring some more employees than putting it into another rail trail at this time. If things change, maybe I would sway but we have enough," said Schaffer.
Work has already begun on the trail and Schaffer says we can expect the bridge to be completed by mid-September.
