Binghamton to Auction 40 Properties
4/2/2013 (Updated 11:01:30 PM)The City of Binghamton is looking to clear and clean up some empty spaces by offering them at auction.
40 properties --all but one of them vacant lots in residential neighborhoods-- will be auctioned in the Broome County Real Property Auction on April 13th.
The city has mailed courtesy letters to every property owner that abuts parcels to be auctioned.
"It's a prime opportunity for a lot of adjacent property owners to expand their yard space, really boost their property values and at the same time reduce the burden on the parks department. It really costs a lot of tax dollars to maintain them," said Tarik Abdelazim, director of Planning, Housing, and Community Development for the City of Binghamton.
Abdelazim says many of these vacant lots were created after the blighted homes on them were demolished by the city.
