BINGHAMTON -- St. James church in Binghamton was packed with families for Easter mass-- described by pastors as the highest feast in Christian tradition.
"It's the celebration of Jesus, who was crucified on Good Friday, for having risen from the dead on Easter Sunday morning," said Pastor John Donovan.
The service was enhanced with extra bells and candles, and a large choir with instruments. Churchgoers then lined up to practice communion. They say the experience was important for their families.
"We're just trying to instill the importance of family and church in our daughter Megan, and the true meaning of Easter," said Kristen Rowlenes.
"This is great to be with my family and grandparents," said Michael Bucko.
And as for all of the Easter eggs and Easter egg hunts this weekend-- pastor John Donovan says they are used as educational tools for children.
"The whole idea of an Easter egg is the chick coming from the egg itself and the ascent of Christ from the tomb," said Donovan.
And he says it is valuable to know the meaning of traditions.
"Enjoy the fun things, as long as we understand what their source really is," said Donovan.
