First Annual Running Of The Bears 5k
3/23/2013 (Updated 10:51:24 PM)It wasn't what you would call a perfect day to run a 5k race, but that didn't stop runners and walkers at Vestal High School.
In fact, over 300 people took part in the First Annual Running of the Bears Race at nine o'clock Saturday morning. Several businesses in the community donated restaurant gift certificates for the winners. The money raised will benefit the prader-willi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that can create a constant sense of hunger and lead to childhood obesity.
"I think what's unique about our race is the number of students we were able to get so we have a lot of young people where this is their first race ever. So it's an educational experience for the them and hopefully something they'll continue for the rest of their lives." said Sue Darpino, Vestal High School health teacher and organizer of the race.
Jack Hillenbrand came in first place. He ran the 5k in 17 minutes and 51 seconds. Coming in second was Dana Carris.
