Discussions Continue Around Chenango Valley, Chenango Forks Merge
3/21/2013 (Updated 10:50:37 PM)On Thursday, discussions continued on how to merge the Chenango Valley and Chenango Forks school districts into one.
A poll of the committee studying the merge revealed a small majority of the committee is in support of making the Chenango Valley Middle School and High School the grounds of the merged high school. The merged middle schools would be moved to the Chenango Forks Middle School and High School Grounds.
Thursday's agenda focused mostly on how transportation would be combined. Preliminary study shows no new buses would be added after the merge. The committee will meet two-three more times to discuss staff and finance issues. A final report must be sent to the State Education Department by July 1, 2013.
"The state has to take a month to review it," said Dr. Dennis Sweeny, Merge Study Consultant. "Then it has to come back, the board members have to review it--and then there is a period that has to be open for about 4-6 weeks where the boards are required to inform the public about all the details of this and give them an opportunity to at least attend a meeting."
If the merger is approved, it would be effective starting July 1, 2014. In the first year-- the districts would also move grade three from Port Dickinson to Chenango Bridge and move sixth grade from Chenango Bridge to the new combined middle school.
