Libous Says Lawmaker Close to Delivering Budget, Minimum Wage Hike
3/19/2013 (Updated 11:02:31 PM)In Albany, lawmakers are close to a deal on the budget, according to State Senator Tom Libous.
The 136 billion dollar spending plan includes a hike in the state's minimum wage, currently set at $7.25 an hour.
Libous says special provisions are being made to ease the impact on small businesses, and companies that hire young, unskilled workers.
"We're still looking to give a credit for those people who hire kids that are under 20, it's not a training wage, but it's actually going to be a tax credit so we got sign off I think from most of the business groups on that and the minimum wage will only go up to $8.00 the first year," said Libous.
The $8.00 an hour bump would happen in 2014. It would increase to $8.75 in 2015, and reach $9.00 an hour in 2016.
