Hornets fall in state title, welcomed home in style
3/17/2013 (Updated 11:10:39 PM)HARPURSVILLE -- Despite dropping their second state championship in three years, the Harpursville Hornets were welcomed home by dozens of Hornets faithful and an emergency vehicle escort on Sunday.
The Hornets lost to Bishop Kearney 54-44 at Hudson Valley Community College. Harpursville got off to a bad start in the first, not sinking a single bucket from the field, only getting four points in the quarter on four free throws from junior guard Miranda Drummond.
But the Hornets never-say-die attitude allowed them to storm back in the second and take a 21-20 lead into the locker room.
But Bishop Kearney prevailed in the end and Harpursville embarked on the long two-plus hour drive home.
After pulling into the school parking lot though, their moods were significantly lifted as fans held posters and banners and cheered for their girls, thanking them for a tremendous 20-3 season.
