Minimum Wage Could Be Raised in New York
3/5/2013 (Updated 6:46:04 PM)In Albany, the speaker of the state assembly said his chamber will pass a minimum wage hike.
Sheldon Silver said the proposal would raise the wage from its current $7.25 cents and hour, to $9 dollars an hour, a level which would take effect in January of 2014.
The bill would also index the minimum wage to inflation starting in 2015.
Governor Cuomo has already called for a hike of the state's minimum wage to $8.75 an hour.
Business groups and senate Republicans oppose the hike, saying it could hurt small businesses, and discourage hiring.
