Ryan defends decision to sell Senior Center
3/4/2013 (Updated 3/5/2013 8:37:37 AM)Binghamton mayor Matt Ryan is vigorously defending his recommendation to sell the Greenman Senior Center to Opportunities for Broome.
He says the sale will save taxpayers more than a million dollars over five years, and reopen a facility that has been closed for more than a year.
Ryan says it's the best option to meet the needs of seniors during tight fiscal times.
"We"ll also bring back to life a center that's been closed for 16 months, and it will be able to employ people, it'll be a good community center. The worst thing that we could have is an empty blighted structure," said Ryan.
The Greenman Senior Center closed after its 40 year old heating and cooling system collapsed. Cost of repairs were estimated at up to a quarter of a million dollars--with no funding source available.
