Tioga Downs makes Red Cross donation

NICHOLS -- Thousands of Superstorm Sandy victims will benefit from a donation to the American Red Cross from Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs casino hotel.

Casino officials presented two checks worth over $200,000 to representatives of the American Red Cross today at Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols.  The money raised through employee and customer contributions will help with Sandy victims' long-term recovery.

"I think we all saw the devastation from the flood up here and Sandy was far worse.  [I said to our customers] 'Hey, you guys remember what happened, let's help out down there'," said Jeff Gural.

"These are still people that are not in their homes, they don't have heat, they still have electricity issues, so that's why the work of the Red Cross is so important," said Shelley Bierwiler of the American Red Cross.

Red Cross representatives say they plan to use the money to help Sandy victims find housing, food, and emotional support.
