Front and Clinton Streets Getting Face-Lift

BINGHAMTON -- The intersection of Front and Clinton Streets has posed problems for motorists and pedestrians for years.
   
Soon there will be fewer accidents thanks to $3 million in federal grant money to fix the intersection.  Designs for the intersection have been completed for a few years but previous funding was lost and the project was shelved.  But now that funds have been secured the intersection will be much safer.

"The accidents at that intersection are approximately over eight times higher than a typical intersection on a statewide average," said Phil Krey, Binghamton City Engineer.  "I think it was as high as 8.6 times higher.  There's a lot of accidents there, in addition to trucks getting stuck under the bridges."

Some of the renovations include lowering the roads under the bridges and improving the sight lines to the new traffic signals.  Construction is expected to begin in spring 2014 and completed in the fall.
