Crappie Derby Cancelled

WHITNEY POINT --  The Almost Annual Whitney Point Crappie Derby was first postponed, and is now cancelled.
   
We spoke with Derby Coordinator David Hughes who told us that to hold the derby they needed about a foot of solid blue ice on the lake.

With the ice forming late this year, plus fluctuating temperatures, and thawing,  Hughes decided it was necessary to cancel the derby

"When you put a few people out here to go fishing that's not a problem, but when you're looking at the possibility of having thousands of people out here you've got to have the solid ice," he said.  "You can't take any chances with the lives of our guests."
 
Hughes says at least four to five inches of ice is needed for ice fishing among small groups.
