Financial Complications for Lesbian and Gay Community

Keeping financial matters in order is a task for a lot of people-- and it's made even more difficult for lesbian and gay individuals and couples.

Thursday, in Binghamton, the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project offered help for those trying to wade through the differences and discrepancies between state law, which now recognizes gay marriage, and the federal government, which doesn't.

"On our federal income tax returns, each of us in my particular family need to apply as single individuals. New York State, on the other hand, since my partner and I are now legally married, are required to file our state income taxes as married.  So when we go to our accountant, it's actually a much more complicated process that's quite duplicative," says Claudia Stallman, Founding Project Manager.
