Local Jobless Rate Climbs

On the employment front good news for the state, bad news for the Binghamton area.

According to the New York's Labor Department, the state wide jobless rate for the end of the year for December of 2012 was 8.2 percent.

While still high, that was a drop of almost a full percentage point over the rate of just four months before, in August of 2012.

And its the largest four month rate drop since February of 1984.

Now, for the Binghamton area, its a different story.

Binghamton's rate in December of 2012 was 8.8 percent up from 8.3 percent in December of 2011.

And it's an increase of .8 percent from just the month before, in November, when the jobless rate was a flat 8.0 percent.
