Family Could Lose Homestead Because of Overdue Tax Bill

At Thursday's Broome County Legislature meeting: -- a man fighting to save the home that he says was bought with the hard-earned money of his ukrainian immigrant parents--
Volodymyr Kurylo says he found out in late December his family owes about $13,000 in back taxes on their Arthur Avenue home.  His sister and disabled brother are currently living there.  Kurylo says he has a check ready with the full amount but because of state and local real estate laws - the house will be auctioned of this spring.  At the meeting, a motion to suspend the rules was voted down and Kurylo will still have to fight to keep his family's home.

"This may just be the  issue.  Procedure. some of the politicians didn't like the way it was presented so they voted it down.  They voted to-not to suspend the rules.  Hopefully in a couple of days we'll get some good news," says Kurylo.
 
Kurylo says his lawyer filed a motion on January 11 for the judgement to be vacated.  The taxes started piling up in 2008. However his sister didn't tell him they were behind until last year.
