Owego residents urged to "Go Green"

OWEGO -- At the Tioga County Office Building on Tuesday, residents came to learn more about energy efficiency in their homes.

The "Green jobs, Green New York" program helps homes and organizations save money on utility bills by upgrading furnaces, water heaters, and heating components.

"Once they get the energy assessment they can apply for NYSERDA's grants and loans or just pay for it on their own," said Solvei Blue, Outreach Coordinator for "Green House, Green Jobs" New York Southern Tier.  "Either way we want people to be more comfortable, help the local economy and then there's also the benefit of reducing our green house gas emissions, and helping the environment."

One of the most important approaches to energy efficiency is proper insulation.
