Vestal Woman's Body Recovered After River Search

A Vestal woman has died after she was discovered under the icy Susquehanna River.

54 year old Christine Mapes was reported missing to the Vestal Police department at 8:43am Wednesday morning.

A search of the area led to the body in the river, behind a house on Loretta Lane.

She was removed from the river and transported to UHS Wilson Hospital,  where ER staff attempted, but failed to revive her.

"Sgt. Hettinger responded to that home and saw what appeared to be tracks leading down to the river.  There was a wooden walkway behind the house.  We were able to break through the ice and bring her out through the same hole," said John Butler,Vestal Police Chief.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
