CADE Releases Food Desert Study

The Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship has concluded a study feasibility on three approaches to bringing high quality local food to the Binghamton Area.

Parts of the Binghamton area are considered food deserts or areas where there is litte affordable healthy foods or no large grocery stores-just fast food or convenience stores.

Three models were examined for their potential to bring good food to high-need neighborhoods.

"I think that this kind of work is really important and we've found that diet is intricately related to health and the more we can make healthy food available to all the more it's going to address issues like our rates of chronic disease obesity, diabetes, and things like that," Rebecca Heller-Steinberg, owner of Extended Harvest.

The study showed the three models were feasible and would require business to work together.
