UPDATE: Fracking Protests to Greet Governor in Visit to Tier
12/4/2012 (Updated 11:55:23 PM)
After landing at Binghamton Airport Wednesday morning, the governor will inspect BAE systems-- as part of the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council Assessment Tour.
The assessment involves the efforts being made to revive the upstate economy.
While green and high tech industries are considered primary avenues to a new prosperity, there is plenty of pressure on the governor to approve hydrofracking.
Although industry supporters say fracking will bring new riches to the area, opponents say it isn't the way to go:
And there are studies that show areas that have been subject to extraction industries actually suffer greater harm than long term good. So the governor should turn his back on the propaganda the industry is spreading that this would bring job and economic safety and security to the area," said Sue Rapp, the co-founder of VeRSE, or Vestal Residents For Safe Energy.
Rapp says her group will be joined by other organizations opposed to fracking.
In addition to demonstrations, they hope to address the governor directly with their concerns.
