Waverly Community Comes Together In Face Of Adversity

It started as a joke during a football rally last month at Waverly High School, three white students wearing make up and re-enacting
an incident where singer Chris Brown assaults his girlfriend Rihanna.

An alumni posted a photo from the incident on CNN's i Report website.  It recieved national attention and some felt it portrayed the Waverly community as racist.

On Sunday students, faculty and alumni came together at Waverly Memorial stadium to form a heart to symbolize that its residents are not who they were portrayed as.  T-shirts and bracelets were sold and a check for a thousand dollars was presented to A New Hope Center, an organization which provides intervention and education regarding domestic violence.

"Were overcoming a sad situation.  We pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off and say ok, how can we learn from this and how can we go forward." said Lisa Bailey, Event Coordinator.

Mayor Kyle McDuffee declared it Waverly Cares Day.  The event coordinator says its residents are always taking part in community events which help others and wants other people to see them for who they truly are.
