Fire Claims Life Of a Binghamton Man

A Binghamton man has died in an early morning house fire on Thorp Street Saturday.

Fire officials said the blaze started around 6:30 Saturday morning in the second story bedroom at 51 Thorp Street in Binghamton.

Authorities said nine people lived in the house and six were at home at the time of the fire, but only five escaped.  Authorities have not released the name of the 41-year old man who was found in the attic.

Officials said the blaze was so intense that it did minor damage to the home next to it.

They believe the cause of the fire was accidental.

"We did an aggressive interior tech, knocked the fire down.  They did their best to save this individual. He was probably overcome with smoke and his wife was in there.  They were both awake and going to get out, he went back for the dogs," said Binghamton Fire Marshall Dan Eddleston.

"There were cops and fire trucks everywhere I could see the smoke and the fore going ablaze," said neighbor Erica Pugh

According to officials, smoke detectors were found in most of the home, but not in the attic.
