Power Outage Safety Tips

One of the biggest threats from Hurricane Sandy is high winds which could cause widespread power outages.  The Red Cross has tips for you to survive a prolonged outage.

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.  First use perishable food from the fridge.  An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours.  A closed freezer will do the same for about 48 hours.

"We suggest one gallon of water for each family member per day.  Also, make sure that you have blankets and medication.  We're looking at seven days of medication on hand," said Shelley Bierwiler of the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross also suggests unplugging unnecessary appliances to avoid power surges once power returns.
