Domestic Violence Month

When it comes to stopping domestic violence, experts say the best way to prevent it is to set a good example for children.

Officials say domestic violence robs children who witness and experience its wrath of their innocence and sense of safety.

The Broome County Family Violence Prevention Council came together Friday to promote advocacy to end domestic violence.

Just in the last year, there have been two cases of homicide in Broome County involving women and children.

Executive Director of the SOS Shelter Rebecca Allerton spoke on the importance of assistance centers.

"The opportunity to develop a plan to be safe is so important.  Every attempt for a woman to leave provides an opportunity for us that we should not miss.  Every night in a shelter means she didn't die that night," said Allerton.

Allerton added that one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.  Almost 1/3 of all female homicide victims in the United States were killed by their intimate partners.

To show your support, the Family Violence Prevention Council is asking everyone to "Shine the Light" on domestic violence by wearing purple on Wednesday, October 17th.
