Retail Survey Shows Record Halloween Participation

When money is tight, folks tend to spend just on the essentials.

But, if you consider Halloween costumes and decorations essential, spending is expected to be the highest its ever been.

According to a new study by the National Retail Federation, a record number 170-million people are expected to celebrate Halloween this year.

About 71% of Americans, or seven out of ten will participate in Halloween fun like trick-or-treating and attending parties according to the study.

Many folks at the Spirit Halloween store in Vestal agreed Halloween is one of the most fun holidays.

"It's the one day out of the year that you can go have fun and let loose," said Spirit Halloween store employee Brenton Tremark.

Broome County Community College student Brian Carr was at the Halloween store to find just the right costume.  "I like to wear scary costumes to my friends' parties," said Carr.

But, it's not just the candy and the costumes that make Halloween fun.

Spending on decorations is also expected to increase.  The average splurge is expected to be around $80, which is up about $5 from last year.

"Pretty much anything you can think and expect to find is in this store," said Tremark.  "Halloween is going to be great.  Everyone loves it and will continue to love it no matter what."

Tremark said some hit ticket decorations like the "electric chair man" have already sold out, and can be found online.
