53rd Annual Columbus Day Parade Showcases High School Bands

BINGHAMTON -- It has been a Columbus Day tradition for 53 years that had to take a break last year due to the flood. But Binghamton welcomed back the Columbus Day Parade and the battle of the bands that goes along with it.

The Johnson City High School marching band continued their tradition of winning.

"Go JC Wildcats!  We did good.  I'm so proud of us.  We're awesome," said Johnson City High School junior flautist Alysha Guillaume.

Alysha Guillaume was one of the 70 plus members who won the a class division's first prize for best overall. They performed and competed against several other high school bands from the Southern Tier.

"I came to hear the music and I wish more people would appreciate the bands from the kids in schools," Parade Announcer Joe Leombrone.

In addition to the bands,  there were costumes, old cars, and live music that got everyone dancing.

"I'm a tuba player.  We always dance.  We put a show on for the people," said Williamson High School sophomore Robbie.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston was there to throw candy to eager kids on the sidelines.  There were many kids who came with their whole families.

"Three of my daughters, five grandkids, my wife.  The little kids all have a good time, have italian food, and listen to the band," said attendee Aldo Broczetti.

Since Christopher Columbus was Italian, people also enjoyed some fresh grilled pizza in his honor.
