A Walk & Run To Raise Awareness About Childhood Obesity

The medical community is hoping to get residents in the Southern Tier  more active and also educate them about obesity.

Earlier this year the Gallup Health-ways Well Being Index ranked Binghamton second on the list of cities that have the most obese people.

It said that almost 38 percent of residents were considered obese.  So the Broome County Health Department and the Southern Tier Surgical Clinic are trying to turn that around

On Saturday at Otsiningo Park they sponsored a walk and fun run to raise awareness about the issue.  Over one hundred kids and adults took part in  the activities and there was also Zumba Dancing to show people that exercising can also be fun.

"This is what it's all about, is to get these little ones to learn how to eat better to learn how to make exercise more fun," said Mickey McCabe, Event Coordinator.

There were also vendors at the park teaching people about  healthy eating habits.
