Vestal Budget Strategy: Zero-Based

A new approach to balancing the books in the Town of Vestal.

Supervisor John Schaffer is going to use zero based budgeting.

What does that mean?

Instead of using previous budget figures to deciding how much to add or subtract, zero based budgeting starts with no numbers.

Departments then have to justify all of their costs.

Schaffer says the town board will meet several times a week for the next few weeks, and the budget will be finalized in November.
