Sizzling Start to Summer

(Source: By Kena Vernon)

We tied the record for heat Wednesday but found people out and about  enjoying the weather but also protecting themselves.

It's a day George Allen and his grandchildren have been waiting for.

They are taking advantage of the warm weather with a walk along  the Vestal Rail Trail.

"We've had so many days of rain to all of a sudden to have a week where its above 70 and not raining it's delightful," said Allen.

Grandson Johan Allen likes the weather but wants to stay safe.

"It is a bit hot but I'm actually enjoying it because there is plenty of shade around here," said Johan.

Broome County Health Department educator Diane O'Hora says he has the right idea but in addition you should also wear sun screen.

"You want to use something with a sun protection factor of at least 15 and you want to reapply it frequently especially if you go swimming or are in the water," said O'Hora.

That is just what we found a group of friends doing be over at the Vestal Memorial pool.

"I'm putting sunscreen on to protect my skin and making sure all of our friend and family are being safe in the pool," said Nicole Diredo.

It's important to stay cool on hot days. Experts say to drink a lot of fluids and to wear light clothing but swimming in a pool is also a good option.

"It's fun because the water is cold," said Kole Schmerder.

A day of fun in the sun.
