Bill Provides Attendance Waiver to Flooded Schools

School districts that had to close or did not open due to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee will not be penalized.

New York state law requires schools to be open 180 days to receive state aid, however a bill approved by both the State Senate and Assembly grants districts an exemption.

The bill was sponsored by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo of Endwell and State Senator James Seward of Oneonta.

Lupardo says the legislation will help districts deal with the cost of flood recovery.

The bill now goes to Governor Cuomo to be signed into law.
