Fighting Illiteracy In Broome County - 10/13/2009
Eleven percent of people living in Broome County can't read, and many of them have been dealing with this disability for years.Jim Harris, the Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers of Broome and Tioga Counties spoke with Binghamton Rotarians Tuesday.
Harris says his organization sees a lot of people between 25 and 45 years old that are having trouble performing daily tasks.
"We're seeing a lot of people who are coming in who don't have the reading skills, and they're not able to look for jobs or read the newspaper, or read prescription labels on bottles, so it's about 17 thousand people here in Broome County," said Jim Harris, of Literacy Volunteers of Broome & Tioga Co.
Literacy volunteer programs are held at the Tioga County Department of Social Service and at Owego Free Academy.
