5 Simple Car Maintenance Tips You Should Know
- Maintain proper inflation —
Under-inflated tires can affect your gas mileage and also
create excessive heat and stress that can lead to tire
failure. Get a tire pressure gauge and check your tires at
least once a month. Keep your tires inflated to the
recommendation in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Checking
your tires when they are cold (driven for less than one
mile) gives a more accurate reading.
- Rotate your tires — Rotating your tires every 6,000 to 7,500 miles helps
to distribute tire wear evenly and ensures you’ll get the
maximum life out of them. The owner’s manual should specify
rotation period and pattern — your tire dealer should know
the correct pattern of tire rotation.
- Change oil frequently — Frequent
oil changes flush dirt and metal particles out of the
engine, prolonging its life. Most dealers and mechanics
recommend changing your oil every three months or 3,000
miles; whichever comes first. Consult your manual to make
sure you use the correct oil and filter for your car.
your transmission — Change automatic transmission
fluid and filter after the first 5,000 miles and after every
25,000 miles or two years after that. Vehicles used for
towing should change the fluid and filter yearly. For manual
transmissions, change the lubricant (motor oil or gear oil,
depending on the car) after the first 5,000 miles and after
every 50,000 after that.
Check power-steering fluid — Check the
power-steering fluid once a month with the car warmed up. If
the level is low, inspect the hoses and pump for leaks. Low
power-steering fluid will make the car hard to steer and
damage the power-steering pump. Be sure to use the power
steering fluid recommended for you car.
