Wild Week 5 on tap

We've seen some great high school football games so far in 2009, but this week's slate might be the best of the bunch. Tonight, Fox 40 will be at 5 games (our season high for a Friday). Here's a look at the highlights you can expect to see on the Fox 40 Sports Report.

Binghamton vs M-E- Our game of the week. Both teams rank in the top 6 of our power poll. The Pats and Spartans look like contenders not only in their division but in the state playoff chase. M-E has rolled over the competition so far en route to a 4-0 record, but they haven't seen a squad like BHS yet. The Patriots won this matchup at the Spartans field last year. After last week's big win over U-E, Binghamton will look to get over .500 for the first time this season.

Vestal vs Corning East- Vestal looked like world beaters in week 1, but since then they've fallen on hard times. An unbeaten East squad invades the Bears' den this week and should give Vestal quite a challenge. The Trojans are always among the sections elite and this year is no different. If the Golden Bears want to win, they'll need their run game to be clicking on all cylinders.

Whitney Point vs Chenango Forks- Forks reigns as the top team in our power poll once again and it's no surprise. They've destroyed all comers and look well on their way to another outstanding season. Whitney Point has been one of the area's surprises so far with a 3-1 record on the year. Although the Eagles faithful will likely be hyped for the team's first Friday night home game of the year, an upset over the Blue Devils will be an extremely tall task.

Waverly vs Watkins Glen- Waverly is off to another great start after taking home the Section 4 title in stunning fashion over Forks in 2008. Kevin Gorman may be the area's most dangerous running back. He leads the section in TD's at his position. Don't be surprised to see him find pay dirt multiple times tonight against a winless Watkins Glen squad.

Tioga vs Moravia- Tioga comes in to this contest as one of the highest scoring teams in the section. They're currently tied with Groton for 1st in a tight Division 8 race. Moravia won't just bow out peacefully though. They were a playoff team a year ago.

Week 5 Power Poll

The stakes are getting higher with the regular season hitting the halfway point. It's tight near the top, but BHS is looking to crash the party. With a handful of hot matchups this week, it remains to be seen who will hold on to their spot in the power poll.

1.) Chenango Forks (4-0)- Blue Devils still haven’t received any resistance this year.
T-2.) Maine-Endwell (4-0)- M-E hoping to avenge last year’s loss to Binghamton on Fri.
T-2) Greene (4-0)- Greene won battle of unbeatens vs. WP. Big tilt with Walton looms.
T-4.) Johnson City (4-0)- QB Jake Spalik has 8 TD passes without an INT this season.
T-4.) Corning East (4-0)- RB Jordan Frysinger ranks 2nd in the section with 12 rushing TD's (Waverly’s Kevin Gorman has 14).
6.) Binghamton (2-2)- The Pats won their 3rd straight over U-E and have righted the ship after a ridiculous starting schedule.
7.) Ithaca (4-0)- Little Red has made winning close games a habit this year.
8.) Newark Valley (4-0)- RB Travis French scored 5 TD’s in big win over Notre Dame.
9.) Delhi (4-0)- The cream of the area’s crop in Class D.
10.) Corning West (3-1)- West going north after Week 1 loss to U-E.

Honorable Mention: Waverly (3-1), Union-Endicott (2-2), Dryden (3-1), Tioga (3-1)
